Introducing Excursions
Where the journey deepens, and the trail teaches something too
Some stories begin with a front porch. Others start on a trailhead.
While most of this journal has been filled with places I've stayed (quiet cabins, oddball inns, houses with more character than square footage), there’s always been another part of the story that happens just beyond the door.
Train ride, Alaska
A trail I followed. A river I drifted. A town I wandered without a plan.
These weren’t the main reasons I traveled. They weren’t the destination. But they often became the most unforgettable part of the stay.
That’s what Excursions is about.
It’s a new part of the journal — still quiet, still reflective — but written with dust on my boots and a little more wind in the lines. These are the purposeful outings that happen during a stay, or sometimes because of one. They might be hikes, paddles, slow bike rides, or just detours that turned into something more.
But they’re always more than activity. They’re movement with meaning.
Sometimes they’ll show up on their own. Other times, they’ll be paired with a featured Stay, like two halves of a page. In certain cases, they may even become Signature Excursions — deeper, richer journeys available to paid subscribers who support the journal.
The pace won’t change. I won’t start chasing thrills or writing about how fast I climbed something. These stories are still rooted in the same soil as everything else here (just written while moving, instead of sitting still).
So if you're the kind of traveler who finds clarity in motion…
If you’ve ever walked farther than planned because the rhythm felt good…
If you believe the trail and the town are part of the same story…
Then Excursions is for you.
